Food & Dining
Known for our seafood and traditional dishes, this place offers an exciting world of dining options ranging from international flavours to local delights.
Though the fishery originated in the eastern region of Newfoundland, you'll find fresh, delicious seafood in practically every corner of the province. Try some wild Atlantic salmon straight from the Exploits River in Central Newfoundland. And regardless of where you end up on your journey, plan on a local favourite of fish & chips. The most famous, Ches's Fish & Chips, started in the 1950s.
If you'd rather enjoy a night out at one of our many fine-dining restaurants, you won't have to look far. St. John's has some wonderful options with a range of culinary adventures, from traditional meals to fresh-off-the-boat seafood, Asian favourites to exotic world and inventive, contemporary cooking. You can sample wild game throughout the province, but it's most common on menus along the Northern Peninsula and in Labrador. (Moose burger, anyone?)
With fresh, local ingredients, feast on some of the most unique recipes on earth. Recipes you've never heard of with names you'll never forget: cod tongues, doughboys, salt fish and brewis, and toutons to name a few.
Try Jiggs' dinner, a staple of a traditional Newfoundland ‘scoff'. For dessert try figgy duff, a delicious 16th-century pudding that's still a favourite. And how about Atlantic salmon in gin and juniper berry sauce, braised rabbit pie, caribou medallions in partridgeberry sauce, and bakeapple cheesecake? Or a deliciously cool martini made with Iceberg vodka? Traditional recipes, newly interpreted.
Seafood and Game
In a land that lives by the sea, taste the freshest food the ocean provides. Mouth-watering lobster, cod, halibut, salmon, and trout. Mussels, scallops, and shrimp. This morning's catch prepared for tonight's dinner - it's that fresh, and that's what makes the difference.
A culinary journey through Newfoundland and Labrador wouldn't be complete without a sampling of wild game. Find moose, caribou, bear, and rabbit prepared in both traditional and innovative ways.
Unique Dining Experiences
Not only can you enjoy unique dishes and exquisite local food, but there are many one-of-a-kind dining experiences you don't want to miss. Lighthouse Picnics
are a great example. The lighthouse, built in Ferryland in 1870, offers exquisite picnic fare in combination with history, culture, and whale watching.
Seafood lover? Check out Bacalao Restaurant
in St. John's for a modern, innovative twist on Newfoundland and Labrador favourites. Or head to Nicole's Café
, an amazing gem in a beautiful, out-of-the way spot on Fogo Island. Tempt your palette with gourmet variations of local cuisine, using fresh ingredients such as crab and pot-caught cod. Wabush (Labrador) boasts Grenfell Restaurant, home to a succulent duck breast garnished with fresh Labrador berries.
If you want to eat like a Viking, plan a trip to L'Anse aux Meadows right at the tip of the Northern Peninsula - home to the Great Viking Feast
. Dine in a sod hut like the Vikings did a thousand years ago, and enjoy a traditional menu of moose stew, Atlantic salmon, cod cheeks, and roast capelin.
By no means an exhaustive list, these are merely a small sampling of the unique dining experiences you can find in Newfoundland and Labrador. Be sure to come on an empty stomach, as there are many more unforgettable experiences to enjoy. Bon appétit!
Unique Products

harvests icebergs and brews crisp, clean lager. For something stronger, there's Canadian Iceberg Vodka, Rum, and Gin, each bottled in Newfoundland and made from the charcoal-filtered and triple-distilled water of iceberg growlers and bergy bits.
For those of you with a sweet tooth, pick up homemade Dark Tickle Jams
that come in wonderful, fresh flavours like partridgeberry and bakeapple. If you're craving something a little more decadent, treat yourself to a box of chocolates made by the one and only Newfoundland Chocolate Company
.
If you're looking for something to bring back home, Purity Factories Limited
in St. John's produces extremely popular candies and flavoured syrups - Peppermint Nobs and candy kisses are always a hit.
